Efficacy of these ingredients also depends on your skin type, according to Dr. Brockman-Bitterman. “If you have dry skin, look for products with hyaluronic acid, glycerin or ceramides. If you have issues with hyperpigmentation look for products with vitamin c, tranexamic acid or kojic acid,” she says.

Meanwhile, retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) might be best suited for those with fine lines and loss of elasticity, because retinol promotes collagen production and can help increase cellular turnover. However, products with retinol can be drying, says Dr. Brockman-Bitterman. “If you have sensitive skin you might want to find products that include niacinamide which can make [retinol] more tolerable,” she says. She explains that serums are often tailored to specific skin issues, like fine lines, wrinkles, acne or hyperpigmentation. “They contain concentrated active ingredients like retinoids or peptides that penetrate deeply into the skin to target these concerns effectively,” she says. Creams, on the other hand provide intense moisture and work to help maintain overall skin health and hydration. Because of this, Dr. Mraz suggests using one after the other to lock in active ingredients. “I recommend applying a potent skin serum to clean dry skin and then follow with a moisturizing cream,” she says.
