Feeling Sad for “No Reason”

by

You’re human, and humans feel emotions. All of them. Even the sad ones. Even the no-explanation ones. And that’s okay. Don’t try to control every aspect of what you feel. Ditch the expectations for how you think you should feel or how you can feel in a given moment. Allow yourself to feel and then heal. It’s important to let feelings move through you before you start healing.

Our mood may change depending on countless factors. Emotions are a response to our environment, thoughts, and experiences — there will always be ups and downs. It’s impossible for a human being to constantly stay positive. And there’s nothing wrong with being upset. It’s impossible for a human being to always feel happy and joyful.

Keep in mind that sadness is usually followed by a feeling of relief. Just like any other emotion, sadness won’t last forever.

If you’re feeling low for no apparent reason, upset, or unmotivated, talk to someone you’re comfortable with. Talk to a friend, partner, family member, or even a therapist. Sometimes, we just need to dedicate more time to self-reflection and attention to detail. Talking about your feelings allows you to spot unhelpful thoughts that trigger negative feelings so that you can challenge them and regain control over your emotions.

These days, do the things that comfort you and make you feel safe.

  • Make some tea
  • Call a loved one
  • Listen to music that makes you feel good
  • Go for a walk in nature
  • Read a good book
  • Tell your family, partner, or friends you’re feeling off, and allow yourself to be vulnerable. If they love you, they will do everything to make you feel better, even if it’s just listening
  • Make a list of any of the things and memories that make you smile
  • Take some time to do the things that you love
  • Take a long bath
  • Give yourself permission to take care of yourself. It’s okay to put things aside.

A lack of motivation today doesn’t make you a lazy person. A bad day today doesn’t mean you have a bad life. Feeling sad today doesn’t mean you’re not happy.

Everything fluctuates, be kind to yourself. ❤
