The Power of Habit – Positive Mindset

by

You wouldn’t be able to get through your day without habits.

Brushing your teeth, eating breakfast, getting dressed for work, getting to work or school, driving,…all of these are based on habits.

Habits are activities that you do without having to decide if you want to do them each time you commence the action. You don’t have to think about how you do these things (mostly), and sometimes you don’t even realize that you are doing something.

We develop habits because our brains don’t want to think about the same things every day. So when he sees a pattern he memorizes the pattern. Without habits, the fatigue of everyday life will kill us. Habits automate our lives. The importance of habits is that they take out the effort from an (and every) activity.

Habits are so powerful. We can just change a habit and turn our life around.

We all hope to become a better version of ourselves and we all have dreams and goals. One of the most important methods to achieve them is to make one habit towards your goals every day.

The habit-change loop:

While habits can seem rigid, they are adaptable. The habit-change loop involves identifying the cue, replacing the routine, and retaining the reward. This process can help you transform negative habits into positive ones, for example.

Let me explain: The brain thinks of a habit pattern as a loop.

A habit is made up of a cue — a signal, a routine — a pattern we follow when we see the cue, and a reward — a reward that we get when we follow the pattern.

For example, the habit loop of eating something sweet after dinner looks like this:

If you eat chocolate after dinner daily, your cue is finishing dinner. You are craving sugar. Your pattern is to eat chocolate. Your reward is that your sweet tooth is happy.

We see a cue, we do the thing, we get our sweet treat, and that’s it.

With time, this loop of cue, routine, and reward gets hardened into our systems. That is when we say we have a habit – the routine is automatic.

And how do we create new habits?

1-  We determine the next habit we want to start

2- Determine the time of the day we want to do it

3-  And we stay consistent. With consistency, the routine becomes automatic.

Here’s why having habits is crucial:

Small changes, big impact:

The power of habits lies in their ability to create significant change through small, consistent actions. By focusing on making tiny adjustments to your daily routines, you can gradually build new habits that lead to profound improvements in your life.

  • Efficiency and productivity: Habits make our daily activities more efficient. When we establish a habit, we don’t have to think repeatedly about the decisions about the same task. This frees up mental energy for more critical thinking, productivity, and creativity.
  • Consistency: Habits provide a sense of stability in our lives. Knowing that certain tasks are routinely accomplished can reduce stress and anxiety, creating a sense of peace of mind.
  • Goal achievement: Many long-term goals are achieved through the consistent practice of daily habits. Whether it’s pursuing a fitness goal, learning a new skill, or working towards a career aspiration, habits help us make progress. Good habits require self-discipline too.
  • Well-being: Health-related habits, such as eating nutritious meals, exercising, and getting enough sleep, have a profound impact on our overall well-being. These habits can boost energy levels and overall quality of life.
  • Personal growth: Habits that promote personal growth, such as reading, learning, and journaling, are key to continuous self-improvement. They encourage us to expand our knowledge, skills, and perspectives.
  • Resilience: Certain habits, like practicing gratitude and maintaining a positive mindset, can build emotional resilience. They help us bounce back from setbacks and maintain a positive outlook during challenging times.
