56 James Clear Quotes on Habits, Systems & Showing Up

by

I’ve sat down with James Clear twice on the Addicted2Success podcast, and I know him personally. The first conversation was in 2014, years before Atomic Habits came out. The second was in 2019, after the book had already changed how a lot of people think about their daily routines. What stayed with me isn’t a slogan. It’s how practical he is about making the first step smaller, protecting your attention, and not putting happiness off until the next milestone.

You can watch our 2019 conversation below. I went back through the conversations, pulled the lines that still hold up, and mixed in some of what James has shared on X, plus a handful of the Atomic Habits quotes people already know. Every line has a source if you want to go back to where it came from. Pick the one that speaks to what you’re working on, then give it a job in your day.

A few of the interview lines are tightened for reading. The dots mean I cut a bit of the original.

Habits: Make the Start Smaller

The first hurdle is often the start, not the whole workout, chapter or business plan. In our conversations, James kept bringing the discussion back to what makes a behavior easier to begin. If the first step feels heavy, make it smaller before asking yourself for more motivation.
